Before independence of India, salt had imported by ships to this location and distributed through goods trains to cater demand of Eastern India including Bangladesh. The entire operation stopped after establishement of rail network within the country and subsequently the entire area handed over to Railways in late 90s. The salt commissioner's office located just on the riverbank is awesome.

Place to sit and enjoy scenery of the Ganges river flowing by, the place is mostly empty at night so it is preferable for a stroll in morning and evening it's a quiet place in a busy city.
The place is also good for jogging walking and running in the morning and evening but avoid it in late night. There are many who come here to stroll and jogg for a healthy excercise

Place is ok. Repairing was going on. People are doing all rituals what we called as Antim kriya as it is located near river Ganga (hoogly). Nice view as howrah bridge is very near. I really enjoyed the place. Yes of course if you are going for rituals then please be sure as mo ey will be ask more by pandits you should have bargaining skills but I heard they are chipper than Bihar Gaya.
