Kolkata metro is not as advanced or elite as delhi but provided it has been providing services to one of the busiest populace of the country for so long is commendable .
I found the stations to somewhat doable but there is a lot of scope for investment and improvement.
I travelled only once from girish park to esplanade, the metro trains were not very clean and neither were the stations, they looked somewhat sloppy but the habit of getting acclimated is what keeps it going.
The metro service in Kolkata is a lifeline for the city as it is very cheap to travel, plus the cool coaches provide solace in fairly humid climate of the city.
I suggest buying a metro card for travelling made easier which costs rs.200 with 150 value.
Most stations are underground.
I liked the kolkata metro services , as taxis are too heavy on your pocket.

Well ...Girish Park is a name that is more synonymous with the metro station, but yes ...the park needs more attention. I along with my wife spent some time at this park after we visited a doctor nearby. The park is the only ground or playground, meeting ground for the people living in high rises nearby. We saw some see-saw for children along with sliders. Mid age ladies and gentlemen making rounds of the park to burn their part of the fat. We saw college kids enjoying the leisure time they usually won't get anywhere else.
The environment is of a typical park in an urban area, where this open park is the only place people can relax and talk about things with their friends.
Note: This park is just a stone throw away from the Girish Park metro station.
