क्षेमक नाम का राक्षस जो भगवान भोलेनाथ का भक्त था उसी ने घाट पे क्षेमेकेश्वर मंदिर की स्थापना की। जिसके बाद से घाट को क्षेमेश्वर घाट के नाम से जाना जाने लगा। सन 1931 में मोतीचंद ने सबसे पहले इस घाट को सोमेश्वर घाट का नाम दिया। लेकिन इस घाट पर सोमेश्वर का कोइ मंदिर या तीर्थ नहीं है। ऐसा मालूम होता है कि भ्रमवश क्षेमेश्वर को सोमेश्वर कहा गया। इस घाट को बहुत पहले नाला घाट के नाम से जाना जाना जाता था। तमिल के संत कुमारस्वामी मठ के द्वारा घाट का पक्का निर्माण कराया गया। गौड़ (भूजा) जाति के लोग मूलतः क्षेमेश्वर शिव की पूजा अर्चना करते हैं।
