Biochemistry as a course was started for the first time in Osmnaia University in 1963 in united Andhra Pradesh. A full fledged department was established in 1971 with founder head Prof. L.K. Ramachandran, a renouned biochemsit.
The departmnet offers courses in biochemsitry leading to M.Sc and Ph.D. The department was served by some of the well known biochemsits like Prof.Shiva Rama Shastry and Prof. S.L.N. Rao. The deprtment is well know for their research activities in Lathyrism, Metal toxicities, hypoxia, Aflotoxins, Epigenetics, Cancer, Endometriosis, Natural products, Nano Technology etc.
The department secured funding from several central governament research agencies such as COSIST, SAP-DRS, from UGC; FIRST level I and II, PURSE from DST; CARS from DRDO and several individual research project from Governament and privateLSRB, DBT, CSIR, DAE, ICMR, ICAR etc. At present there are 6 teaching staff and 15 non teaching staff, a DST women Scientist and Assistant Professor FRP (UGC) supporting the program. Apart from campus activities the deparmtnet is involved in undergraduate biochemsitry course structuring in all Osmania University affiliated degree and PG colleges. The Ph.D program offered by the department is benefitting several research institutions around campus such as IICT, NIN and other private hospitals and Medical Colleges.
