Superb place. Nicely maintained. Ultimate for photo shoot. Would have been Panasonic if the Kund is water filled

Built in the 10th century by the Tomar ruler Suraj Pal, this huge water tank is believed to have been constructed to pay homage to the then-prevalent idea of the worship of the sun. The shape of the tank, like a huge circle, is supposed to represent the sun, with the massive steps descending to the base of the tank recalling the rays of the sun.

To get to the tank, you need to first enter the main gate of the Surajkund Complex (a resort, and the Surajkund Mela grounds are part of this), for which you’ll need to pay an entry fee of Rs 20. Drive in, follow the signs to the tank (it’s labelled ‘Sun Pool’), and to a parking lot. You can either park here and walk down, past a series of replicas of famous Indian heritage sites, like Charminar and Bhimbetka, or you can drive down, a hundred metres or so, to the kund itself. At the entrance to this is another ticket counter; entry fees is Rs 25 per adult; children below 15 go free.

The kund is huge, its diameter at the base 300 metres. Stone steps lead down to the base, which is now completely dry and covered over with grasses and wildflowers. When we visited, in spring, there were only a few workmen here at the far end; we were the only visitors.
