Since this is such an important site in Kali worship, where the goddess Sati’s big toe fell to earth, we made sure to visit Kalighat on our tour of Kolkata sacred sites. The temple itself is smaller than one might expect, but it was open even to us as foreigners, who were allowed into the presence of Kali along with Hindu worshippers. There was a huge crowd trying to get in as quickly as possible, pushing and jockeying to get a view of the image. A platform outside the main shrine is the site of animal sacrifices as part of Kali rituals. This small but busy and lively temple surrounded by shops is clearly the heartbeat of the Kalighat neighborhood.

A densely populated neighborhood with a traditional vibe, Kalighat is known for Kalighat Kali, a revered Hindu temple complex from the early 1800s. It contains several shrines and altars where devotees ask for blessings. The surrounding area has tea stalls and unpretentious markets selling everyday goods, as well as time-tested cultural venues.
