Right on the east side of the College Square park there stands a fenced memorial which has “49 Bengal” engraved in it. This is in memory of the 49th Bengalee Regiment which was raised in 1916 for the then raging World War I. After the induction and initial training, the first batch of 228 soldiers, were sent to Mesopotamia front in the Middle East. Of whom 63 died and a memorial was built in College Square in 1924 to honour the dead. The famous Bengali poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was part of this regiment but did not see action. He wrote his famous poem, Kamal Pasha on his return home. It is said that this poem drew inspiration from his military experience and his inspiration from the life of the Pasha. Begalee Regiment was disbanded in 1920.
