It is difficult to trace the exact origins of the Tapovan Temple; however, legend has it that it was a place of penance, forfeiture, and abode for Guru Dronacharya, teacher of the Pandavas and Kauravas.

You are welcomed by a colossal statue of Lord Shiva at the temple's entrance. The inner sanctum holds the Shivalinga, a symbol and reflection of Lord Shiva. One of the major reasons people visit the Tapovan temple in Dehradun is to pay their respects and pray to the Rudraksha tree within the temple premises.
