This ghat in Varanasi gets its name from the Naga Saint Mahanirvani. According to oral sources, sage Kapila lived along this ghat, and as per legends, once Buddha took a bath at this site. The ghat is located on the North side of the Nirvani Ghat which serves as a resting place for nagas during and after the Kumbha Mela. The Maharaja of Nepal constructed four Shiva temples here making it religiously significant. It is also the site of Karttikeya temple, the only in Varanasi. The ghat is also famous as the abode of Acharya Kapil Muni of Sankhya who lived here in 7th century A.D. who. Home of legendary Mother Teresa is also situated here which serves today as a support centre for the poor, handicapped and sick.

Mahanirvan means uniting your soul "aatma" with the supreme soul "Paramatma". This place is unique. It happens to be a good way to spend your evenings. The mornings are equally good if not better. The ambiance and beauty of this place is just amazing. But the crowd can be problematic. But that is not a very big problem. All in all a beautiful place to just relax and unwind with some music.
