Just… incredible. We took a larger boat down the river and watched the ceremony from the water. It was an amazing experience, almost overwhelming at times. I would imagine that that experience from the ghat would be completely different than from the water side and just as impressive.

The offering is made to the Goddess Ganga, also affectionately referred to as Maa Ganga, goddess of the holiest river in India. The aarti takes on special significance on the auspicious occasion of Ganga Dussehra (in May or June each year), when Maa Ganga is believed to have descended from heaven to earth.

Its history is thousands of years old. Dasaswamedh means the sacrifice of ten horses. According to legends, Lord Brahma organized a Yagya here to recall Lord Shiva from exile. Due to this, every evening there is an aarti of the Mother Ganga, so once Banaras awakens again in the evening.

Ganga aarti is a magnificent evening ritual in Varanasi that one must not miss. The aarti, or worshipping River Ganga, takes place every day, at dusk. The ceremony is performed by a group of priests on the ghats.
