The Agra Mental Asylum and Research Center, which is an autonomous body under the Uttar Pradesh government, will also start offering nursing courses specialised in the care of mental patients

Talking to India Today, a senior staffer of the asylum informed that the Agra mental asylum was established in the year 1859. At that time, it was called the Lunatic Asylum, later on being renamed as Agra Mental Hospital. Now, it is called the Institute of Mental Health and Hospital.

It was setup under the Indian Lunatic Asylums Act, 1858, which was passed following the lunacy of the then Governor of United Provinces John R Colvin in 1857.

Colvin and several other British officers had become mentally ill after the brutal suppression of the 1857 mutiny by Indian troops.

The hospital administrator Dr Dinesh Rathore told India Today that the asylum is spread in 173 acres and was renamed to Institute of Mental Health and Hospital under instructions from the Supreme Court of India.

He said that this hospital was the first mental hospital where the first medicine for medical illness was administered to a patient in 1950. Before that, the only treatment for mental illness was Electro-Convulsive Therapy (ECT), which has not been used for many years now.

He said that apart from the SAARC nations, this hospital has also seen patients from far-off countries like the US, UK, German, Nigeria and many others.

In the British era, the hospital had segregated wards for Indians and foreign patients. These wards are still there, although the segregation ended with independence.

Dr Rathore said that being the oldest and biggest mental health institution in the country, the Agra mental asylum is known all over the world and has even entered the folklore and found mentions in movies despite there being many mental asylums established by the British government in India in the mid to late 1800s.

At present, he said, the hospital has been upgraded to a research institute where research can be conducted for degrees like PhD, MD and M.Phil in mental health.

Its a good experience that i could see all the psychological test, but as a Ph.D. student, I need multiple intelligence test, it is not in the catalog please guide me.
