About Subramania Bharati
C. Subramania Bharati was born in 1882. He died at the young age of 39 years, in 1921. He did not have much of public attention during his short lifespan. He was born in a middle class family, lost his mother at his age of 5; was brought up by one of his relatives and he got married at the age of 15. He started making poetry at his age of 6 or 7. A group of admirers gave him the title, “Bharati”, meaning Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge. For the next 30 plus years, he wrote various poetry, prose, plays and articles for newspapers in Tamil and English.
Only after his death in the year 1921, people who knew him started writing about him and their memories of his contact. Various books on Bharati were published. In 1941, Chellamani, Bharati’s widow, published a book. “Bharathiar Charithiram”, that became a classic work on his life. In the year 1944, Va. Ra., a famous writer and close friend of Bharati published “Mahakavi Bharathiar”. After independence, during 1950s and 1960s, everyone started to talk of Bharati and his works.
