Arulmigu Prasanna Venkatachalapathi Temple, Melur, Tallakulam, Madurai

Arulmigu Prasanna Venkatachalapathi Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is located at Tallakulam, Madurai District, Tamil Nadu State. Thallakulam is just 5 kms from Madurai Bus stand. City buses are available in plenty. Tamil New Year Day, Adi Pooram, Purattasi Brammotsavam, Vaikunda Ekadasi, Pongal, Ten nights festival (Rappathu) are celebrated in the temple very grandly. Chithirai Thiruvizha (Festival in April-May) is very famous. As the Venkatachalapathy in the temple appeared to (Prasanna) to Thirumalai Naicker, the Lord is called Prasanna Venkatachalapathy. Those who are unable to visit Tirupati consider this temple as a substitute. The temple, built 600 years ago, is designed to face the Thirumalai Naicker Mahal facilitating worship of the lord from this distance. The Anjaneya on the right side of the Lord looks furiously. With a view to contain his anger, on the opposite side the Conch and Wheel are installed on a pillar. Every sculpture in the temple is testimony to the temple architecture of Tamilnadu.

It is one of the lovliest and important temples in Madurai. The main god here is lord PERUMAL. The temple also has a lord hanuman sanathi too. The temple is famous for 2 reasons. Primary reason is that the temple houses lord ALAGAR at the time of lord MEENAKSHI KALYANAM which happens in the month of April. At that time the temple is so beautiful and has a grand festival look. All people put different costumes and they splash water on others it is a event that is done to bring down the anger of lord ALAGAR.
The second is at the time of September and October which is the tamil month of PURATASI. It is the important month for lord PERUMAL. The temple is so packed on the Saturdays of the PURATASI Month. There is also a cow shed here where you are allowed to feed the cows for 10 to 30 rs. The entry is free and also has a special entry of 10 rs. A peaceful place to enjoy your day.

Temple timings

Evening: 16: 30 to 21: 00 hours

Prasannam means that which appears in the mind. There are staunch devotees who attain darshan of Lord in their mind though they could not have it with physical eyes. King Tirumalai Naicker had such a darshan of Lord Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal and built a temple at Tallakulam in Madurai. Similarly, a king of the Thondaiman dynasty in Thirumalayavur prayed to Lord Venkatachalapathi for safety to his land. Lord protected his land. When the king expressed his gratitude to the Lord, He came to this hill with His scepter and granted darshan. Thondaiman king built this temple and named the Lord Prasanna Venkatesar.

There are two procession deities, Srinivasa and Kallarpiran. The former comes in car procession during the Purattasi festival and later in Chithirai festival. There are shrines for Chakarathazhwar, Venugopalar and Lord Sri Rama in the temple. Sri Veera Anjaneya is at the foot of the temple in a flying posture. Devotees submit their prayers in writing to Sri Anjaneya, cover it in a yellow cloth along with an unstripped coconut. Lord Lakshmi Ganapathi shrine is nearby.
