We did this hike at the end of March, and in the morning there was excellent visibility that fogged over completely by 1030am.
We left Rabongola just before 8am. We stayed to left and followed the water pipes until the white sign (pictured), where there was a fork. This first 1km is completely flat. We took a right, and headed up the cobblestone/rock path. For the next 4km, this is completely uphill. Every km you will pass a small open air shelter, and I personally do not think the trail is hard to find. It goes straight up, which is the “short cuts”… you can follow the original trail which is a series of switchbacks, but as they are not as often used, there can be fallen trees that are harder to traverse around at some points. If ever in doubt, just follow the rubbish!
At the 5km, you come out to a flat meadow. From here, the next half km is completely flat, and I imagine has really excellent views if you’re lucky (or early!) enough.
Then the next half km is uphill again. We reached a second meadow, where a small guide dog joined us. It’s flat for another 1km, where they are building the gondola (completed, and running when we got there, but not taking passengers until September, allegedly).
Just next to the gondola building is the top, covered in prayer flags. We reached here at 11am.
We had bad visibility, and there is no where to sit the last two km, so we decided to head back towards the 5km meadow. You should stay right the entire way back to Rabongola, except for the left when you reach the white sign. It took us about 2 hours to get down.
If you are an experienced hiker, this is easily done in 5 hours. If you are worried about the trail, you can download FATMAP (we realized the trail was on it once we got down).
