The Pemayangtse Monastery of the Nyingampa order, is situated in the Pemayangtse Town of Sikkim, at a distance of 6 km from Geyzing. It was established in the 17th century A.D., by Gyala Lhatsun Chenpo and is considered one of the oldest and most important monasteries of the region. The monastery houses Zandog Phalri, a wooden carving that depicts the various realms of the universe, according to Buddhism. It also boasts of a collection of antique Buddhist idols, ancient scriptures and sculptures. Since it is situated at an altitude of 6840 ft above sea level, it offers views of the Eastern Himalayan Range, from Kaluk, Soreng and Rinchenpong.
The first floor of the monastery houses decorated paintings and magnificent sculptures. The monastery houses a seven-tiered painted wooden structure representing the Heavenly Palace, Santopalri, of Guru Rimpoche; built over a period of 5 years by the late Dungzin Rimpoche. Tourists can also observe the Chaam or monk dance festival, held annually on the 28th and 29th day of the 12th month of the Tibetan lunar calendar. On the third day, the dance comes to an end, with the unfurling of the Ghyo-Ku and a large embroidered Buddhist scroll.
