We left at 3 pm, drove 1 hr to the Desert National Park, stopping off at two interesting sites on the way. Then we rode camels for an hour through desert scrub to a sand dune. The sand dune was not very wide ( walk the width in 15 minutes) but was longer than I could see. We camped here under the open stars on comfortable cots/ beds. The team of 3 made us Chai, Dinner and Breakfast. It was beautiful and very low key. We saw no cars or other groups at our campsite. Apparently the SAM Desert (the larger dune) is overrun with tourists now and it is impossible to get this sort of experience there. Everyone I asked seemed to agree. While I did think we'd be in a dessert kind of like the Sahara Desert, with endless dunes, and was perplexed that it wasn't like that, I was very grateful that we were away from everything. No dancers appeared out of the distance, no lights from any luxury camps, just us, our crew, the camels and a few adorable village dogs.

If you are in Jaisalmer then this is one of the must do activity. You will find Arun bhau, Sanju bhaungi will drive you 50km out of town to experience one of its kind night camps in the dessert. You will also meet Naru who will ensure you get the best camel ride experience- this group of wonderful people ensure you get a good dessert ride in their Thar and the camel ride to middle of the dessert dunes- that you are fed on fresh cooked food cooked by them on wooden stove - they carry cots for your night sleep and beddings for night camp - there is no tent it open air sleeping under the sky - something you must experience - you will not have provision for toilet so go if you are willing to use open toilets - since the groups are small it is nice quite and easy - net if it the people make it an experience you would remember for the rest of your life - wonderful people.

We did the overnight camel safari and it was incredible! The people were extremely hospitable and some of the nicest hosts I've ever encountered. Our jeep driver, Hukam Singh, was very nice & friendly, always asking about our wellbeing, etc. On the way there, he took us to a beautiful, blue oasis and an abandoned village/fort. He helped make our beds and food at night, and on the way back the next day, he even took us to his village for masala chai made by his cousin! The camel ???? guy, Sambhu, was even more friendly and funny. He said his English wasn't great, but had some great jokes up his sleeve. He was very nice to us and even to the camels, made us the dinner and breakfast, and told us stories, even showed us gazelles & a desert fox ????! The campsite is in the middle of nowhere on dunes, and has a spectacular sunset, nightsky full of stars at 4am after moonset, and sunrise. As promised, we were allowed to shower on return by the very kind owner, Narendra Singh, who kept saying "feel at home". The Rooftop restaurant was great too, with a view of the Fort and the tower. Highly recommend it, and if you do visit, make sure you tip the guys well!
