Hey , I believe in the power of a good compliment. I think giving a true and honest compliment doesn’t just make the other person’s day, it makes yours as well. I won’t tell you it’s always easy but I feel like I am my best when I can forget about myself and focus on others. I don’t mean it as some sort of call for collective hivemind-ism, but just remember we’re all human. Humans, as a rule, like attention. But people like heart, we all need a healthy dose of sincerity. Those compliment-fests that happen in the hall, where girls compliment each other back and forth just to receive compliments in turn – that’s not what I’m advocating. I mean real, heartfelt, often random in their delivery, but kind and insightful compliments. Those brighten people’s days.

We’re all human, we all like to be noticed. And we all need to notice each other. People forget that sometimes, that we can’t just live in our own heads. When you compliment someone, you’re getting out of your own head and your own comfort zone to make someone else smile. There’s power in that. I believe paying attention to others enough to give a sincere compliment keeps you from just focusing on yourself. It takes practice; that whole being thoughtful business. But children seem to have it down. It’s the honesty involved, kids haven’t muddled it. When you can stay open enough and live with childish honesty and wonder it’s infectious, and really leads to the best kind of compliments. It’s about telling the truth. Noticing beautiful truths.

Compliments are powerful – they empower the person receiving them but also instill something in the person granting them. Giving a compliment means that you had the confidence to put yourself aside and think of others, without expecting them to return the favor. Comfortable enough to put yourself out there and talk to strangers sometimes, if you are in a moment where your random words can make their day. I believe in having the faith in people in those moments to reach out. There’s a bit of Golden Rule cycle in there as well. But just as its important to be able to give an honest compliment, I believe in the peace that comes from accepting compliments with grace. I hope that we all respect ourselves enough to appreciate our own value. I believe in loving yourself. So as an act of self-love go out on a limb and love others. It makes you happy, simple as that. I’m happiest when I remember I’m not so alone I can’t reach out and notice the goodness in others. I can’t think of many fantastic talents I have but I know that I have practiced and cultivated the talent for seeing others in a positive light. And sometimes that feels like enough. I suppose that makes me a humanist, follower of Christ, lover of smiles and strangers. I believe in knowing your strengths and admitting you weaknesses. I believe the greater power comes from seeing other’s strengths and allowing them their weaknesses. Compliments are beautiful like that – they do good to those on both sides. The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen is someone’s eyes when you said a kind word that truly made their day, you can’t help but feel good about that. I want to live my life making others happy like that, and I know that Life kicks some of that happiness back. I believe in honesty and kind words. And noticing when some one has the amazing ability to rock the color chartreuse and your own ability to appreciate the power of you.
