At a time when Bombay was a bustling textile hub of the British empire, this Parsi journalist, philanthropist and a member of the Legislative Council, was amongst the few who sought to strive to improve the terrible working conditions for its tens of thousands of workers.

In 1878, he drafted a failed pro-labour bill that proposed to limit the working hours of men, women, and children in textile mills to 11-10-9 hours respectively. The bill was instrumental in putting a spotlight on these issues. He went on to become the Sheriff of the city.

A nice, little known statue right opposite the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar statue honoring one of Bombay's finest citizens.

Its a real shame that so many people pass by this statue but have never even heard the name of this distinguished man, someone who Mahatma Gandhi wrote an entire chapter in his book about and labelled the 'Pefect Satyagrahi'
