Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan, better known as Mirza Ghalib, the brightest jewel in world poetry got a new lease of life as Mumbai immortalized him in the form of a huge mural at Padmakar Tukaram Mane Garden on the Clare road at Nagpada Junction. The mural is a new center of attraction and a selfie Point for teenagers and of course Mirza Ghalib fans.

The mural which adorns on a huge wall of the Padmakar Tukaram Mane Garden was inaugurated on Monday by noted poet and Bollywood lyricist Javed Akhtar. Other popular personalities present were local MLA Waris Pathan, from AIMIM, MLA from nearby constituency Amin Patel from Congress, MLA Abu Asim Azmi, from Samajwadi party, Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar of Shiv Sena and others.

Few may know that earlier Clare road was named after former Governor of the Britsh Bombay John Fitzgibbon, 2nd Earl of Clare but in 1969 the road was renamed as Mirza Ghalib road. Recently Local corporator Rais Shaikh, got the mural painted as a step towards the redevelopment of Nagpada junction.

The mural, which furnishes a wall at Nagpada Junction, is 10 feet high and 42 feet long. Interestingly the mural has been painted by two Marathi artists from JJ College of Arts called Artists Damodar Aware and Tushar Shinde, who had worked hard for months to cast Ghalib and his life journey. The project cost is estimated to be Rs 50 lakh. In mural one part show the great poetry of “Mirza Ghalib” and other part show the Freedom Struggle from the British.

It may be noted that Mirza Ghalib was born on 27 December 1797, in Agra because of the notable Urdu poetry he was called “Ghalib” which means overpowering. He was not only popular in Pakistan and India, but also among the Hindustani diaspora around the world. He later shifted to now known as Old Delhi, where he died in 1869 in the Ballimaran area.
