This statue stands in tribute to Lal Bahadur Shastri, one of the Indian independence leaders and 2nd Prime Minister of India and Prime Minister during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965.
The monument is a statue depicting Shastri walking wearing the traditional Nehru style jacket and Indian cap. In his left arm he holds book, possibly the Indian Constitution. The statue stands atop a plinth referencing the aforementioned war. On each side of the square plinth is a sculpture of a pickaxe and machine gun forming an ‘X’ shape and underneath written the words "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan" in Hindi and English, which translates as "Hail the soldier, Hail the farmer".
The statue is located about half way between the Gateway of India and David Sessoon library on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Marg. The statue is quite plain and more significant for locals than for foreigners. It’s worth a quick detour if you’re in the area. Otherwise I would not go out of the way to see it.
