Vanchikulam one of the famous historical landmarks in Trichur, located in pothole and near to railway goods shed.

Very long ago more than 50 years back the pond was used for trading and business activities through the water ways connected to the pond. Agrl.produces and commodities were transported to Cochin by using the water ways connected through different small rivers and backwaters. Kettuvallam the boat driven by man power was used for this.

In 2010 the pond was renovated and cleaned by Trichur corporation. Thanks to the corporation for the effort taken for cleaning and maintaining the Vanchikulam so beautiful with clean and neat. Everybody likes the place.

I have heard great stories about this place. But you can't even find any skeleton as proof right now. Elders say the place was a transport hub when water transport was the preferred choice. During shopping festival, they light up this area in respect of its past glory. To the uninitiated; the whole thing is a very narrow canal leading up to a pond. I find it extremely hard to believe this place moved goods in volume to far away places. If you still want to visit, go there and sit on the side walls and steps leading to the pond. But don't disturb women from the nearby colony of garbage collectors taking bath and washing their clothes, the only people whom the place now serve.
