One of the oldest and most important temple of Mayyanad,Kollam.Recently renovated and has now one of the biggest Sanctum sanctoram of south kerala.the preceding diety is lord shiva in the form of 'madan thampuran'.The idol of the temple is very special and unique as it is one of the biggest'shivalinga's in Kollam district. Another speciality of the temple is that it is one of the rarest temple in Kerala without an idol of ganapathy or snake gods.The other and only sub diety of the temple is devi bhagavati.The annual temple festival falls on the last Tuesday of malayalam month 'kumbham' and is one of the famous temple festivals around Kollam region(if not south Kerala),The major attraction is the 'gajamela' held in the late evening during the festival day.But the most important part of the festival is the ' thalayedupp malsaram' of the elephants which participate in the gajamela.It is the most famous thalayedupp malsaram of south Kerala and is one among the major thalayedupp malsaram(s) held in whole kerala.the malsaram (competition) also has the distinction of being the only thalayedupp malsaram (among major ones) to be held at night after 'kettukazcha'.thousands flock to the temple to witness it as famous elephants from all across Kerala participate in the competition to bag the first price and title - 'പാലകാപ്യഗജപതി'. Appart from gajamela and thalayedupp malsaram,kettukazcha is also conducted in a grand manner by the temple authorities and the villagers of mayyanad.As it is one of the most important festivals of Mayyanad village.Other important ritual is the 'samooha ulsava pongal' held 2 days before the festival as it is the biggest pongala offering in Mayyanad.The deepakzcha held the day before the festival is also a sight to behold.the temple also boasts of having a spacious ground with plans for the temple to develop in the future.
