One of the oldest and famous temple @ land of temples 'Mayyanad'. Temple's history get backs above 13th century when it was a famous Buddhist temple under Travancore at that time and later became an hindu temple. The important feature of this temple is that, the bala Subramanian Idol faces the western direction same as that of palani and the temple's pratistha is believed to done by 'Shankaracharya', All time legend of Hinduism, a great philospher & theologian. Later the temple was renovated by the powerful lady ruler 'Umayammarani' of Venad Kingdom about 500 years ago. Currently the administration of the temple is under Travancore devosam board.
The temple is located in an hilly terrain facing the paddy field (West side) called Umayanalloor Ela on the downside. The scenic beauty of the Ela from the temple is a must watch. Temple also holds ponds on northside. Also got north and west entrance from the road.
One of the best attraction of the temple is Aanavaalpidi or 'Aana Vaal Pidutham Mahotsavam during the Malayalam calendar 'Meenam'[mid-March], attracts hundreds of devotees. Devotees run after an elephant and catch its tail, symbolising the childhood pranks between the deities Subramanyan and Ganesha. A unique fest of it's kind in Asia. Nedumkuthira Eduppu" or Kuthira Eduppu" performed during the festival season embody the unity & strength of the mob. "Thaipuyyam" is also celebrated in a big way.
