Apart from celebrations at each parish, the Latin archdiocese of Verapoly has launched a series of programmes at the Queen’s Walkway for the general public which would continue till the New Year’s Day.
At Malayattoor, the mega carnival which was not conducted in the past two years is back this year and to celebrate it, the organizers are hanging 10,022 paper stars around the water filled Manappattu Chira where the carnival is held. Meanwhile, the parishioners at Our Lady of Life Church, Mattancherry, have erected a 65-foot-tall figurine of an angel holding a scroll which reads ‘Gloria in excelsis deo’ (glory to the God in the highest).
The events at Queen’s Walkway were inaugurated by Archbishop Mar Joseph Kalathiparambil. Mayor M Anilkumar switched on the lights of 100 Christmas trees arranged at the walkway at the event on Thursday evening. Traditional Christmas lanterns too have been set up here and T J Vinod, MLA, switched it on at the event. The programme titled Christmas Walk will have events like carol competitions, flash mobs, performances, games, etc. every day till New Year’s Day. On Sunday, there will be a display by 350 dancing Santa Clauses.
Archbishop Kalathiparambil gave a Christmas message at the event on Thursday evening. He said that the happiness of Christmas increases when it is shared. “We can strive to wake up from the sleep of selfishness. We all are angels sent by God to watch over and help everyone around us,” he said.
Fr Sojan Maliekkal of the archdiocese said that the event will be held in the evenings. “For parishioners, there will be prayers as usual including Midnight Mass. The programme at Queen’s Walkway is being held for the public. It is being held with the cooperation of the Kochi corporation,” said Fr Maliekkal.
“The angel figurine at the church at Mattancherry was erected in front of the church on Tuesday. The response has been great with many visiting the church to see the towering structure,” said Joseph Praveen, convener of the parish at Our Lady of Life Church, Mattancherry.
