Skand puran Reva khand adhayay 103 (hanumadisvaravarnana); RKV 83 (Hanumantesvaratirthamahatmya) - After the killing of Ravana everybody i.e. Ramacandra, all the monkeys and Laksmanadid penance. Then Ramacandra said to Hanuman: "Hanuman! By killing the sons of Ravana, you have committed a brahmahatya. Therefore You should also do penance for Shiva so that you too be released from your offence of brahmahatya." Hanuman replied: "I can myself fly and personally beg Shiva forgiveness." Having said this, Hanuman flew up to the Kailas. When he went to see Shiva, Nandi gana, stopped him and refused to let him in. Hanuman asked him for the reason of his refusal. Nandi said: "You have committed a brahmahatya. You have killed Ravana's sons and you have burnt down Lanka. You can see Shiva only after that offence is removed. Go to the bank of the Reva and do penance." Then Hanuman went back to Ramacandra. On his advice, he did penance and obtained siddhi. Eversince the name of this village is Kapisthitapur and the name of the tirtha is Hanumantesvar. At the end of the tretayuga the maiden of the family of the ruler of Kanyakubja and raja Suparva obtained siddhi here(Revakhanda 106). The great temple here is very beautiful, as is the ghat.
