This temple was constructed during pallava period and extended during rajendra chola l period! The shiv ling inside the temple is a swayambu lingam formed by sand.. Goddess vadivudai amman is very powerful here.. there are lingams for all 27 nakshatras in order.. adhipureeswarar, thyagarajar, thiruvotteeswarar, agasalingar are main deities of temple.. this was a workship place for pattinathar and it was also his birth place.. bhairavar has a seperate shrine inside d temple.. it is one of the most important shiva temples in chennai city after Mylapore kabalishwarar.. must visit and get the blessings of shiv and vadivudai amman ????????

At the left side of the temple all the 27 stars lingam is been mounted and at right side there is a Meditation hall followed by small pond full of big fishes and lots of goats, Hens can been seen all over the temple. Crowded during festival days and other spiritual occasions. Spiritually recommended.

One of the very old and beautiful temple in Chennai which you shouldn’t miss. Its very near to Thiruvotriyur Theradi Metro Station which is hardly a 5m walk. Try to reach as early as possible as the temple staff will sharply close the temple by 12PM urging the devotees to move out. It takes min 1hour to visit all the shrines inside temple. Lord Adhipuriswarar is covered in a Box with Nagabaranam on top. Seems like the box is removed and darshan of the lord is provided only for 3days starting from Karthigai full moon. There is separate shrines for Lord Thiruvotreeswarar and Thyagaraja Swamy. Vaduvudai Amman is also in separate shrine near to the Raja Gopuram and its bliss to watch when you buy ₹25/head special dharshan ticket. This temple also hosts shivalingam for each of the 27stars. There is a pond inside and outside the temple. Pond inside the temple has water and some fishes too. There is a Goshala inside temple and you can feed them as well.
Its very big beautiful temple with trees while few shrines inside it could have been maintained better. Shrines like Annamalaiar and the near by shrines dont have much maintenance and they have dumped waste wood and products nearby causing some bad smell. It could be cleared and maintained well.
There is a Prasadham counter inside temple from which you can buy eatables and its fine.
Reach early and if you have time sit nearby the (Nagar statues) Neem and Peepal tree, it was so calming with fresh air!
