29 August : Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio on 28th August 2008 officially inaugurated the newly constructed Multi-purpose Indoor Stadium at Imkongmeren Sports Complex Mokokchung. The stadium was constructed at a cost of 1.9 crores, by the Department of Youth Resources and Sports, funded by the Government of India, Ministry of DoNER under NLCPR. He also declared open the 32nd Inter District & State open Badminton Championship.

Speaking on the occasion, Rio stressed on quality control deeming it as a yard stick to measure up any infrastructural development as an asset or a liability for the people. He also maintained that sports have become one of the most lucrative profession in the world and in this regard the Government has formulated a Sports Policy to provide basic sports facilities and also incentives to sportspersons, he added. He called upon sportspersons to have a professional approach in order to achieve excellence in their chosen discipline. He also added that sports is one big festival that promotes peace and brings people together.

Earlier the welcome address was delivered by Deputy Commissioner Mokokchung, Bendangkokba. Parliamentary Secretary for Sports & Youth Resources and Land Revenue and also Vice President, Nagaland Olympic Association, Naiba Konyak, Chief Secretary & President, Nagaland Badminton Association (NBA), Lalhuma and Vice President, NBA, Pusazo also spoke on the occasion. The function was chaired by K.T Sukhalu, Secretary, Youth Resources & Sports and Technical Education. Altogether 175 participants, representing eight districts and Nagaland Police are participating in this year’s edition of the Championship. To the delight of the crowd present the Chief Minister played an exhibition match at the new stadium.

Earlier in the day the Chief Minister had a public interview at the Deputy Commissioner’s bungalow with representatives from Ao Senden, Senior Citizens Forum Mokokchung, Watsu Mungdang and AKM. The Chief Minister was accompanied by Minister for PHED Dr. Ngangshi K. Ao, Parliamentary Secretary, Housing and Land Revenue, Er. T. Saku Aier, Dr. Neikiesalie Kire, Chairman NHHDC and other senior Government officials.
