Located in what is probably the smallest of the five open spaces that together make up the historical August Kranti Maidan, this iconic memorial stands proud and tall, dedicated to the Father of the Nation, for his inspiring speech and decisions taken to oust the British at this very venue almost 77 years back, by making a 'Do or Die' call, as part of the legendary Quit India Movement on August 8, 1942. Back then, this was called the Gowalia Tank Maidan, a name which recalls the historical tank, that existed here in the 18th and 19th centuries. Erected in 1970, this pristine white, memorial column made of marble, stands at least 80 feet above ground level. It was inaugurated on the occasion of Gandhiji's 101st birth anniversary, by the then chairman of the Bombay Unit of the Gandhi Smarak Nidhi. Sadly, not many of the current generation would be aware of this great salute to one of the main stalwarts of India's Freedom Movement. So, all you young folks, please make it a point to visit this stunning monument, and pay your respects to the great man!!!!

There is a garden here when one can sit on grass or just walk around it in circles. Garden is not crowded and closes at 9pm. Students come here to study during exam time. There is a watchman and we cant sleep on the grass
